With over 100 golf courses in the desert and
several more planned and currently under construction, the desert continues
to be a "Golfer's Paradise." Since 1925 when Thomas
O'Donnell built the first nine-hole golf course in Palm Springs, golf
enthusiasts have flocked to the Coachella Valley. The famous Bob Hope
Classic charity golf event is played annually at various championship host
courses as the desert attracts the world's finest players
and celebrities, including Phil Mickelson, Kirk Triplett, Jesper Parnevik,
Yogi Berra, Troy Aikman, and Roger Clemens. Several "big time" mega
celebrity skins games and PGA pro events feature Tiger Woods and LPGA pros
like Annika Sorenstam are also held annually at Trilogy and Bighorn Golf
Clubs. The desert in recent years has also become a haven for baby
boomers and golf enthusiasts to live, vacation, and even retire on the
fairways of the Back Nine or the 18th Hole. New home developers are
currently building some of the finest luxury homes available in the world in
the newest upscale country clubs with 18-hole Championship golf courses
designed by famous golf pros, including Arnold Palmer and Greg Norman.
SilverRock Resort in La Quinta is the newest championship golf course with
a Grand Opening scheduled in 2005.
