I'm having some remodeling work done on my home, do I need to pay for the work upfront?

Never ever pay for any work upfront or pay for materials upfront.  Reputable contractors have a credit line for materials.  Pay for materials after the first day of work when the job has been completed or one-third (1/3) of the amount of the contract.    Pay the rest only after the job is finished.  Consider a "penalty clause" in the contract that deducts a percentage from the cost of any repairs or remodeling work that are not completed by the designated date.  The Federal Trade Commission says to beware of any "contractors" who don't list a business number in the phone directory, accept only cash payments, or pressure you to sign immediately or ask you to get the building permits.  Always get a written contract.
